The satellite economy and where its going
The satellite economy is a massive market which is only going to expand exponentially as the use of satellites increases. From understanding the secrets of the universe to allowing you to use GPS, satellites do it all and we are only going to need bigger better and more of them to fuel earths insatiable economic need for growth. But how can you viably send a million dollar satellite into space where there is a high chance of it being hit not only by small debris which can possibly put your satellite out of use but there is also the threat of larger debris which would fragment your satellite into a 1000 pieces which would then add to the space debris problem even more. You cant.

In a paper done by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences it is said that the risk of collisions and the taxing of operators using satellites will reach an annual rate of US$235,000 per satellite which will quadruple the value of the satellite industry by 2040. This is a tremendous amount of cash in a market that is already predicted to reach a value of US$3 trillion. If those figures haven't convinced you that space debris removal isn't gonna benefit your economy in a huge way then just look at the how the ESA (European space association) has just signed a deal (1st Dec 2020) with a small start-up swiss company for US$103 million to remove 1 just 1 piece of debris from orbit by 2025.

So not only is it needed now but it will be needed 100s of years in the future.
